Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) was established in 1874 and was at that time referred to as Central University. At its inception, the university mainly offered training courses to elementary and secondary school teachers. In 1966, the school changed its name to Eastern Southern Kentucky and added several degree programs in addition to its teaching courses. The university, which is located in Richmond, Kentucky, has several regional schools in Manchester, Danville, Corbin and Lancaster. These regional schools offer both undergraduate and graduate programs.
Besides the above schools, Eastern Kentucky University also provides online degrees through its distance learning program. Through its online program, students are provided with a variety of programs, which they can interact with through the interactive TV and though the web. The online degree programs reflect the university’s philosophy of individualized programming where students can study at their own pace in the comfort of their homes or offices. Some of the courses can be completed entirely online while some require a combination of online and on-campus class interaction.
Academic Programs Offered by the University
Eastern Kentucky University has five colleges and a graduate school that together provide a total of 150 degrees. These are Colleges of Business and Technology, Education, Health Sciences, Justice and Safety and Art and Science all of which offer undergraduate and graduate degrees. Through its online program, the university offers other courses in fields such as Accounting and Systems Technology. EKU’s College of Justice and Safety provides the following online courses; bachelor and masters degree in Corrections and Juvenile Justice, masters in Safety, Security and Emergency Management, Bachelor’s degree in Fire and Safety Engineering Technology. It also provides certificate programs in Fire and Safety Engineering, Professional Certificate in Youth Services among others.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The tuition fees for the online courses offered by Eastern Kentucky University are $358 for undergraduate courses and $ 517 for the graduate program. The fee is charged per credit hour. The university offers its students various financial aid programs, which are mainly targeted at needy students. These financial aid programs include the Federal Direct Loan program, Direct PLUS Loans, Direct Grad Loans as well as Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans. The university also provides several grants such as the Kentucky CAP Grant, and SMART Grant. Students can also benefit from the university’s scholarship programs as well as its work-study program.
The university has been accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This ensures that all the courses provided by the university are of high quality and authentic.
